playing my pedal steel at church [Amazing Grace]

Post by Bob Carlucci »

First time in many years I have played steel other than in a spare bedroom.. Steel sounded over compressed on recording, but not while I was playing, and they turned my volume way down at times when I was was supposed to be playing with the piano.. So not perfect, its journeyman level playing, and fairly rudimentary , but hey, I was a honky tonk player that was "the pedal steel player" the minute I could almost play the intro to Panama Red. It was fun to just play again for real people, and they really enjoyed it... After the "performance" Pastor Matt made some cool observations about playing pedal steel that I appreciated... enjoy..... Song starts around 34:00.

You sounded real nice, Bob! I enjoyed your music. There is a psalm that says "praise Him with a 10 string instrument" and you did just that. Wish I still had that Red MSA that I sold you years ago.

,That guitar was a flawless beauty Larry.. I wish I had it too. Indistinguishable from a brand new factory fresh guitar..I gave you $1500 at that time I think.. Worth a lot more now if it stayed in that condition,,, not even a speck of dust on it... bob

Thanks for posting Bob, great playing. Every Church should have a resident steel player!

i realized now why it sounded somewhat "squashy".. I have a very nice half rack dbx compressor I use in front of the amp, very clean and quiet pro quality unit.. However, I have a little $60 MIC effects also in line that has pretty decent OD,delay, reverb, and comp.. I had the comp on in that unit as well as the dbx which is very clean and transparent. The comp in the cheap unit is squashy and not very clean... WHY it was engaged I have no idea.. anyway, it wasn't awful, but I could hear it, and between that and the AV crew messing with the sliders mid song, I know it could have been better,,, anyway, it was fun and it blessed a bunch of folks in the congregation...

Nice arrangement. Good licks. I like the lowering the string on the sustained notes.

thanks Rick.. What you are hearing is simply dropping string 6 a full tone.. I use it more than most players.I have had it on pedal 4 instead of a lever for as long as I have been playing.. Its not "better" than a lever, but is a lot faster on a pedal, and has a different feel.. I have always found it more expressive on a pedal than a lever, and since thats what I learned with almost 50 years ago, i stuck with it....

Beautiful rendition, love the passing chords and the little things that you do to make it sound so good!
